1872 Instructions

Click on the images to read

I originallly could not think of any letter "I" photos for ABC Wednesday and thought about posting these. But, since they were kind of bland, I found something else.

However, I couldn't let these go without showing them to you. These 1872 Instructions & Punishments were photographed from a window of the first public school in San Diego named the Mason Street School. I cringe every time I read them and glad I wasn't living back then.

Love the handwriting on the second one.

Oh Dear, as someone who was 'punished' at school, that made me shiver! I watched a 60's movie the other night and a boy, hands outstretched was being given the belt. After 2 strokes he refused any more - what could the teacher do? I wished more children had had the courage to say no to this brutal form of discipline.

David, maybe they made the writing fancier to make the Punishment seem less harsh.

Walksfarwoman, luckily I was never was punished at school, but I can see why some people would want to quit school or teaching.

Neva, it is an interesting piece of history. They also sell these 2 documents at the school on parchment paper in case anyone wants a hard copy.

Dana, you and me both. Luckily, no one can get away with having these strict rules now - in the U.S. anyways.
