An alleyway linking San Francisco's Chinatown and North Beach was once part of the Beat Generation neighborhood which gained prominence in the 1950's. Writers and poets such as Lawrence Ferlingetti, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, ...etc. gathered here to write and socialize. Mr. Ferlingetti owned the famous City Lights Bookstore right next to the alley and he proposed to the city in 1988 to remodel this once dingy pathway. It was renamed to Kerouac Alley after the writer with tiled wordings on the street and colorful murals on the walls.
Without doubt the most interesting alley I've seen!
They did a great job, it's the opposite of dingy now! Very nice passageway and nicely captured. I imagine those words would be inspiring to walk past.
