Hummingbird Discovery

Another hummingbird nest has been uncovered. This time not in my backyard, but at a local nature preserve.
The mother hummingbird seen here is feeding her two babies approximately 4-5 days old.

The momma comes back every so often to feed her growing chicks. They looked quite hungry with their mouths opened and pointing skyward awaiting for her return.

Unfortunately, the nest is exposed to the elements so the momma perches in such a way to block out the rising sun as she feeds her babies.

Momma continues to provide shade.
Quite a few people have come to observe this fascinating nature story, but we are worried the upcoming heatwave will be detrimental.

Nice pics but sad about the full sun. Some of the birds on our property have not made good choices on where they put their nests.

What a wonderful find, love your shots of the hummer and nest. I hope they all survive the heat.

great photos. hope the babies will be able to survive and won't be eaten by predators.

Yogi: Someone said the branches were cut back. I hope it was not because someone wanted a better view of the nest!!!

Eileeninmd: I will go back tomorrow to see who they fared.

Life Ramblings: There is a sign in front of the nest to tell people not to go off-trail and disturb the nest; otherwise, there is a $500 fine. I wish predators can read.

It is really the unique and awesome site. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.

Wonderful pictures. I've only ever seen one hummingbird myself, and the light wasn't very good.
