This is how the statue looked prior to the San Francisco 1906 earthquake compliments of the imagekind.com website.

The statue of the Goddess of Progress was on top of the San Francisco City Hall dome. After the 1906 earthquake, the city hall building was severally damaged, but the statue remained intact on top of the dome. In 1909 when they removed the statue to demolish the building did the the statue fall on the ground and its head detached. Today, it is inside the museum section of the San Francisco City Hall.
a work of art that's many years older than me and tells a thousand tales...glad the head was at least saved and preserved...read the text on the second photo and smiling when I perceived what seems like the shadow of you taking the photo...thank you once again for the virtual tour and for visiting my humble world :) Happy day on your side :)
I never knew this - thank you for the history lesson, of course I love the fact that she came down off the building fine, but didn't survive a car trip - classic!

Quite powerful!
Interesting info.
I never knew there was a goddess of progress, How ironic a story. Suppose that's one kind of progress?
what a shame she lost her head..
What a story, sorry about the head being detached. Have a great day!

Amazing how the statue remained intact, considering that the old City Hall was largely destroyed.
