Have you cheated? Will you report other drivers?

How many of you have driven in the carpool lane during rush hour with no passengers?

I know I have and I think some of you have too. :P

There is now pending legislation in California to setup a 800 number hotline for drivers to report other drivers who use the carpool lane illegally. To read the news report, click San Jose Mercury News.

If there is a 800 number, would you report fellow motorists who misuse the carpool lane?

I think the answer to that would be how bad of a day I'm having - ha ha. I would definitely consider it...but honestly I wouldn't take the time to do it probably unless the driver that did it had been pissing me off earlier and/or was driving erratically, etc.

Dana, I agree with you about reporting other motorists. To keep the record straight, I don't use the carpool lane illegally on the freeway, but maybe a few times on the streets. :P

I bus it to work, but work with someone who regularly calls the 800 number when she sees carpool (or litters) violators.

Quite proud of it she is too.

An 800 number would just cause more problems with people using their cell phones whilst driving.

Steven, I agree with you about driving and using a cell phone. I was wondering how can they prove a driver was actually using the carpool lane illegally? If I didn't like someone, couldn't I just say "that driver" drove in the carpool lane illegally? By the way, I would never do this! :)

I don't drive so I can't say I have, but I find it really annoying that, rather than just actually carpool to use the carpool lane, which would give the advantage of both legally using the carpool lane AND doing your part to shrink your environmental footprint, people do things like dress up mannequins just so they don't have to deal with people.

As for reporting people I saw doing it, I might if I noticed. Although there is also the problem of "it's illegal to call and drive" and "how the fuck can you prove this."

Here via blogexplosion as well.
