Cairn Artist

While walking along the San Diego marina area, I saw the "Rock Man", as he calls himself, piling rocks. He is a local artist demonstrating his skills and patience to passers by. I watched him for several minutes doing his thing before I got bored. Patience is not one of my virtues.

I did put in a small donation into his tip box. Another woman behind me gave him food which he said is the best tip he can ever get.

After a minute or two, here is the result from the picture above.

most exceptional - do they last long usually?

Ackworth, I didn't stay long enough to see how long they stay, but I imagine if a strong wind or wave shows up, they will be toppled over. I guess it's meant to be temporary art.

I see those a lot when I am hiking. I guess I always thought they had something to do with telling the time by the shadow of the sun.

Oswegan, I guess it could be used to tell time or someone with too much time on their hands. :)

I thought the rock piling when hiking is to kind of show your path - so in case you get lost???

Dana, I have never seen rock pilings during a hike. To me, it will be kind of weird and spooky to see something like that in a deserted area.
