Thanks everyone for visiting and commenting. All good guesses, but it is a gopher peeking out. It was quite shy, but it stayed out long enough for me to get a portrait of him/her.

Betchai/Tracy: There are a ton of gopher holes in this park and we were lucky enough to encounter one who decided to come out its front door.
