Going on 3 weeks since they hatched; yesterday, one of the babies tested its wings for the first time and flew from the nest. Without much control, it got tired quickly and eventually landed on the ground.
My husband picked it up and put it back on the nest.
Here is the little guy or gal. From what we read, hummingbirds do not have a strong sense of smell, so the momma bird will not know it was touched by a human. This morning, Friday - July 9th, both hungry babies were craning their neck looking for momma to feed them.Momma comes on a regular schedule for feedings. Sadly, in a few days, both will fly away and not return to their now familiar nest. They will be on their own hunting for bugs and nectar. Soon, they will be adults and start the cycle all over again.
It was entertaining and educational while it lasted. I hope it was for you also.- Karen

oh, they are very cute, and looks so fragile, indeed having them is very educational. surprisingly, we have birds nesting by our bathroom window too, but hard to take a picture :(
I love these photos. Thank you for enriching my life.
Goodness! The babies are so tiny! I didn't think they were so small and so cute.
Such wonderful creatures. This is maybe the best look at hummingbirds I've ever had.
great series of photos. it must be wonderful to watch them grow. Nature is so amazing.
I love the photo of the bird on the finger. I can't believe how tiny they are.
I have gone through the same experience with the Tailorbirds.
It was fun but sad to have them flying away.
Anyway, their nest is still firmly attached to the leaves.
I just logged through the whole series. What wonderful pictures, and how exciting that you were able to be a part of this unique hummingbird adventure.
This is really cool. Have you seen the book "A Hummingbird in My House" ?
The little hummingbird is so cute. I love the photo of the bird on the finger too. :)
Thanks for sharing the updates on the birds.
Oh how cute! I've seen many hummingbirds but have never found a nest. You did good with the pictures!
Betchai: Unfortunately, we don't have control where birds make their nests. Maybe you can get a better view from outside. Hopefully, it's on the first floor.
Sandy: Thanks! You are welcome!
RoseBelle: They are tiny and fragile creatures. It's nice to have such a rare close-up view.
Ratty: Thanks! I agree about the view.
Life Ramblings: Thanks! Isn't nature amazing?!
Yogi: Such tiny creatures, but do so much work as pollinators!
Rainfield61: Well, with the nest still there, it will always bring you back happy memories.
nothingprofound: Thank you for going through the series. It was an adventure and learning experience.

dot: Thank you for visiting. After hearing from everyone, I guess seeing hummingbird nests are rare. I'm glad I had the chance and was able to share the experience. :)
Karen, I have NEVER seen anything so precious. Seriously, this series has been so touching and sweet.
The baby bird's so cute...perched on the finger. These birds move very fast and can be very difficult to photograph.
