I is for Ibises on ABC Wednesday

There was another "I" photo I wanted to post, but to keep with the San Francisco Zoo animal photo series, I decided to post the Ibises photo.

At the zoo, these Ibises were housed in an enclosed area where they were free to roam as they pleased; however, most were happy just perched in one spot. From what I learned, most Ibises are quiet and social birds. The Waldrapp Ibises in the photo are nearly extinct in the wild, but they reproduce well in the zoos and could some day be brought back to Africa and Turkey where they originate. Although I have to say, they have a face only a mother could love. :D

I agree that they are not the prize winning faces. Great shot and choice for I.

THat is an impressive beak. I guess it digs into trees/earth/sand for food.

The word "ibis" is often found in crossword puzzles, but I must admit I never knew what they actually looked like. Now I know! And I agree...a face only a mother could love. Good one! :D

Keep up with the zoo. The pictures are wonderful. Maybe a choice for me for the next round--a trip to the zoo.

Ibis is a good one. I've never seen a black one. I'm sure I have a photo of a white one from around here but didn't want to dig through the hundreds of pics we've taken at the zoo over the years to find one. Too lazy, I guess. :)

Thank you everyone for your comments. Glad everyone knows what an ibis looks like now. It is quite an unusual looking bird.

Since Wednesday is always so busy for me, I'll get to your posting as soon as I can.

I'm glad they're doing well in zoos. They aren't beautiful, but I love their beaks!
