Feed Me for a Quarter

I visited the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo last weekend. The picture you see is a donkey in the "Animal Contact" area. He was one of many animals where visitors can buy food for 25 cents (0.17 Euro) to feed them.

In the photo, this donkey looks sad and hungry and appears to hypnotize you into buying him food from the dispenser. But, don't be fooled, he was the first animal into the Animal Contact area and received the most attention.

With that expression I would say he knows how to work it well. Cute post!

Yes, he could certainly convince me that he is hungry! Bet he collects oddles of quarters.

Cute and original!!!

KML, doesn't he look sad and pathetic? I think it took years of self training.

Dot, he was certainly well fed. Notice the empty food dispenser. All the animals were well-behaved and didn't fight for food. I had to say the cow and sheep down the line didn't receive as much attention.

Thanks NYCIndividual! I had to wait for awhile before the crowds cleared away from this donkey to snap the shot.

Love the kind of innocent face of the donkey, cute. I love the warden's house photographs, very nice. I miss the trip to Alcatraz. Only watched it from afar, the fisherman wharf, i should go, regrets... : (

Thank you very much, Peace. The donkey is very smart to give all the visitors that sad, innocent look. Maybe this is an incentive for you to come back to SF and visit Alcatraz.

I am sure people take care of these animals. In RO they are still striving to implement an animal protection law...

That's a new one - usually you see the sign "Don't feed the animals" with serious threats of fines and expelling from the zoo underneath.

Thank you for a nice comment!

Awwwww, he is adorable. I would feed him as many quarters worth that he wanted.

Smart little suckers aren't they?
I bet he practices every morning before going out for the show :-)
Very nice shot.

Nice shot. The donkey knows where to hang out.

Lara/Runee, we are lucky to have quite a few zoos that allow visitors to feed the animals. That's the only way to get up and personal.

Andrea, he has you trained already!

Thanks Joderebe. I think he's been to human training school.

Maddy, I see you are a local. It's my first time at Happy Hollow. Sounds like you've been there too.

Oswegan, Yep, he was at the front of the line. Those at the end didn't get much food.

When you visit him again, please give him a pat and .25 worth of goodies for me. Thanks.

Lilli & Nevada/Snitterdog/Theresa, I think the donkey was trying to appeal to visitors who take pity on sad & cute looking animals. There's actually a change machine nearby so one can feed them until everyone's content. :)
