Alcatraz Series Continues
Back by popular demand, here are additional photos of Alcatraz. The top photo shows how the civilian residences looked before they were demolished in 1972. Following it are 3 photos of how they look like today.
I just learned yesterday there is a ballot in the upcoming election to tear down all the historic Alcatraz buildings to build a Global Peace Center. Click on the link to learn more.

That would be a shame if it was all torn down. If people are still interested in going to see it you would think they would leave it alone.
That is sad. Very interesting post.
awww... I wish to visit it. So sad they are going to tear it down.
Ruins make for sad, but great pictures! Have you gone to Angel Island?
By your pictures, it seems you feel the same about this area of the earth, as I do about Staten Island and Manhattan, NY. I cannot seem to get it out of my system.
I just went through all your Alcatraz posts. Fascinating. You know, I must be one of the very few people who while in San Francisco didn't go to Alcatraz. Too depressing, I guess.
Thanks for the link. I read the article and I'm thinking that a Global Peace Center sounds nice, but I'm afraid it'll be extremely commercialized, more like a Global Shopping Center, you know.
Everyone, thanks for your comments. It is a shame that some of the housing was demolished on purpose. I suppose it was to avoid another takeover of the island or they were too dilapidated. I just think tearing down Alcatraz and replacing it with something else is a bad idea.
I visited Alcatraz back in 2001 I think it was. It must have beed dreadful as an inmate.
Beed?
